Conservation and Leadership class pushes students boundaries

Biology News - Wed, 2012-08-01 09:41

At the Caye Caulker Marine Preserve, just a few miles west of the Belize Barrier Reef, eight Marietta College students snorkeled in the clear aqua water, stingrays and nurse sharks floating inches beneath them.

Moments later, their snorkeling guide speared a lionfish, holding the spiny and venomous marine creature above water, telling the students about this invasive predator and its negative impact on the reef’s ecology.

This was only one of innumerable learning opportunities during a three-week course in Costa Rica and Belize for the students, who were accompanied by Drs. Rob McManus, David Brown and Dave McShaffrey.

Rachel Shoop ’15 nabs coveted REU internship in Wisconsin

Biology News - Mon, 2012-06-04 12:33

It’s rare for a freshman to find an internship through the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU).

However, that didn’t stop Marietta College’s Rachel Shoop ’15 (Parkersburg, W.Va.) from scouring the REU website in a desperate attempt to land one of these coveted opportunities.

“I made a list of the ones that most interested me and narrowed down my options by looking at eligibility requirements and dates (most of the internships last 8 to 10 weeks),” says Shoop, who is majoring in Biology. “Some of my possibilities were removed from the list because they were searching for sophomores and juniors, but a few stated that they would consider freshmen with a decent background in the sciences.”

The late Vernon “Dan” McGrew ’49 described in In the Various Branches of Useful Knowledge the College’s effort to build talented science faculty in the early part of the 20th century.
