Biology takes place outside the lab in the real world.  At Marietta College we strive to give students a real-world exposure to organisms both in the lab and in the environment.  Many of our classes feature field trips to the many local ecosystems handy to the campus.  But we also work to give students experience beyond our local ecosystems - we travel to ecosystems of interest beyond the Mid-Ohio Valley.  Not only do these trips expose the students on them to these unique environments, but pictures and video from our trips are used in a variety of classes.  Featured below are a number of our longer field trips....

Spring, 2015 - The Biology Department teamed up with McDonough Leadership and Christopher Newport University  for the 3rd Central American Conservation & Leadership trip, with a very special guest!  3 weeks in Costa Rica and Belize. 


Spring, 2014 - The Biology Department returned to Costa Rica in May! A newly designed course combined an on-campus classroom course with the field component in Costa Rica. Link!

Spring 2013 - Biology and Environmental Science team up with the McDonough Center for Leadership and Business for a trip to Cambodia and Thailand!

Spring 2012 - Costa Rica and Belize  Biology and Environmental Science, together with the McDonough Center for Leadership and Business, traveled to Costa Rica and Belize!



Spring, 2011 - Costa Rica:  Our 4th trip to Costa Rica!  Another 3-week immersion in the biota and culture of this fascinating Central American Country.  First for this trip included getting above the treeline on the volcano Rincon de la Vieja (right) and visiting the national park at Volcan Tonorio, with it's famous blue waters.
Spring, 2010 - New Mexico and Texas:  In place of a field trip to the geology dinosaur dig in Utah, this western American road trip took us to the Guadeloupe Mountains on the Texas-New Mexico border, and continued on in New Mexico to Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, Valley of Fire, Socorro and Bandelier National Monument.
Summer 2009 - Guatemala/Belize:  Biology and Leadership combine for a trip to these two Central American Countries
Spring 2009 - Costa Rica:  The third expedition to Costa Rica meant visiting a third lowland tropical rainforest field station - El Zota.
